Something that many don’t realize is that Nigel Shelby could have been any Black gay man that you know today. Personally, from Elementary through the end of my 7th grade year I was called “faggot, punk, sissy, etc.” almost daily. It weighs upon you, it changes you in ways you often are not aware of… You sometimes begin to think that the world would be better without you. Couple daily verbal assault and hate speech with general unlearned and ignorant church rhetoric that tells you you’re going to hell and God hates you… One sometimes develops a “why am I here” attitude.
To anyone who is struggling with acceptance of their sexuality due to the way they are being treated by others (this, at any age), please know that God Loves you. Know that you are fearfully and wonderfully made. Know that you are incredible and God made every facet of who you are.
As you speak the name Nigel Shelby, speak ALL of his truth, not just the ones convenient to you.
To those who bully and operate in hate (this includes adults), GET HELP FOR YOURSELF. If the existence of another person causes you to insert yourself unwarranted and in negative ways in their life, YOU ARE BROKEN AND NEED ASSISTANCE.
To those who seek to silence the fact that Nigel was Young, Black AND Gay. As you speak the name Nigel Shelby, speak ALL of his truth, not just the ones convenient to you. To exclude his gayness or queerness in the equation means that you are part of the problem.
